The sound of a place: how Cairn's blocks got their voices

On per-material sound families, why stepping on a block matches mining it, and the music that waits.

Close your eyes in Cairn and you should still know where you are. Underfoot, in your hands, in the dark — a place has a sound, and my whole job is making sure Cairn's places do.

Every material in the game belongs to a sound family: stone, wood, sand, grass, glass, gravel, wool, metal. A family isn't one sound effect. It's a small living kit of related tones that get pitched, layered, and shuffled so you rarely hear the exact same click twice, but you always know instantly which family you're touching.

Mine it, step on it — same voice

The rule I hold above all others: the block you step on clicks like the block you mine. If stone crunches a certain flinty way when you break it, your footsteps across stone carry that same flinty grain. Wood knocks warm and hollow whether you're chopping it or walking it. Sand hisses both ways.

This sounds obvious. It is shockingly easy to get wrong, because footsteps and mining are usually built by different people at different times, and they drift apart into two unrelated libraries. In Cairn they're drawn from one source per material, on purpose. The payoff is that your ears build a coherent map of the world without you ever thinking about it. You learn a block's voice by mining it, and then that voice narrates every step you take across it.

A world sounds real not when every sound is expensive, but when every sound agrees with every other sound about what things are made of.

Why so much of it is synthesized

A lot of Cairn's block audio is procedurally synthesized rather than recorded. Recording is wonderful for a hero moment, but for a game where you might touch a block ten thousand times a session, recordings become a liability — you hear the seams, the loop points, the one sample that's just slightly too loud, and once you've heard it you can never un-hear it.

Synthesis lets me do a few things recordings can't:

  • Endless small variation. Each break or footstep is generated with tiny shifts in pitch, filtering, and grain, so the tenth stone in a row never sounds like a stamp.
  • Consistency across a family. Because footstep and mine come from the same synthesis model per material, they can't drift apart the way two recorded libraries would.
  • Restraint. Synthesized sources are cheap enough that I can afford to keep everything quiet, short, and dry. Cairn's blocks whisper. Glass is the one allowed to show off — that bright shatter is my favorite thing in the build.

I tune each family the way you'd voice a character. Metal wants a short attack and a ringing tail, kept on a tight leash so it never becomes a cartoon clang. Wool is nearly silent, a soft padded fmp that makes it the block people instinctively floor their bedrooms with. Gravel is the loose, tumbling cousin of stone — same family lineage, looser grain. Grass is a dry brush. None of them fight for your attention, which is exactly the point: the mix stays open so the one sound that matters right now can be heard.

The music that waits

Cairn barely has a soundtrack, and that's the design. Over a 20-minute day/night cycle the ambient bed shifts with the light — the day breathes one way, night another — but actual music, the composed kind, arrives sparsely and at long, uneven intervals.

The reason is simple: music you can't turn off stops being music and becomes wallpaper. When a piece fades in only after a long silence, you look up. It lands as a small event — a reward for having been present, quietly mining and placing, long enough to deserve it. Then it fades back out and leaves you with birdsong, water, and the flinty click of your own pick.

I'd rather you remember the silences. The music is just there to make you notice them.
